Every night in Varanasi is the spiritual Hindu aarti ceremony, and 1,000s of people flock from all over the world to attend. Obviously the moving crowd fills the surrounding streets as they come and go. Here’s a view from amongst it all, captured by getting in the middle of the crowd, holding one’s camera as high as one can reach & hoping one’s aiming it in the right direction.

Sonepur Mela is Asia’s largest cattle fair, lasting up to a month in the state of Bihar. 2,500,000 - 3,000,000 visitors attend and trade includes farm animals, horses, rabbits and even elephants.
Horses are frequently exercised by riders equipped with makeshift saddles running them through the crowd.
One must keep one’s eyes open, especially whilst crouched down in the middle of it trying to take photos with a 35mm lens.

6 years ago I got on a plane and flew to Yangon, Myanmar to attend a 2 week Street Photography course run by @markseymourphotography
This was a photographic genre I had never attempted before and one i wasn’t sure i’d even enjoy, or indeed how I’d fare trying to keep pace with the group. It did sound like an adventure and all i knew for sure was that i didn’t want to spend my whole life simply sitting at home editing repetitive images & playing computer games.
I’d made the decision to leave my bulky, heavy, full frame Nikon DSLRs in the UK and opted to take a lightweight Mirrorless Fujifilm XT1 along with a 23mm prime lens so i wasn’t as reliant on other people to carry my stuff.
So on Day 1 of the course i found myself getting taken across Yangon at 3am to wander about San Pya Fishmarket for 4-5 hours before the sun came up. It was cold, it was dark and the sensory onslaught was disorientating. We split into pairs and were sent off to photograph the unfamiliar surroundings we found ourselves in.
Problem. It was dark and my camera didn’t want to photograph anything. I remember the immediate concern that the little Fujifilm had been a mistake, but I decided i’d at least try & take something rather than quit before i’d started because my camera wasn’t good enough. I didn’t have many options but the one i chose was to set the ISO as high as possible (6400), set the aperture as wide as possible (f2.2) and set the shutter speed relatively slow (1/125s). As long as the subjects were sitting somewhere near a light source it seemed to focus enough….
It wasn’t until later that day when the images were uploaded to my laptop that i realised how much performance there actually was in the mighty Fujifilm, & that i’d fallen in love with a whole new approach to taking photographs and making images.
This is the first image I took that morning and is of some of the many men unloading, smashing & distributing ice around the busy market whilst on a short break.

Travelling always resets my perspective of the world, and watching from my hotel room as these slight woman, dressed immaculately in beautiful sarees and sandals lifting huge quantities of concrete whilst looking after their kids did exactly that.

7,500 light years away from Earth, in the constellation of Cassiopeia, is a cloud of glowing ionized hydrogen gas with darker dust lanes called the Heart Nebula (IC1805).
This it my first attempt at it from my back garden last night.
