Grandparents Again?

Grandparents Again?

Hi All

A few weeks ago when Janina and I gave a short presentation at one of the Zoom meetings about wildlife in our garden since lockdown, I mentioned that we had a pair of Mallards visiting and mating on our pond. Since then we have rarely seen them. This afternoon, totally unexpected, the female appeared on the pond with 12 ducklings. We are not sure how they got there and can only assume she has been nesting in the garden without us noticing. This, if it true, would be very surprising as it had been necessary for us to water all our plants during the long spell of dry weather and we should have noticed.

  1. Mummy looks very proud of herself John, you will both be worrying for a while now hoping they are all there every morning!!!!

  2. Unfortunately Tinus she and the family were not there the following day. We suspect she has taken them to the brook a few hundred metres away and then possibly to the fishing lakes about half a mile away. We will have to wait until next year.

  3. I have good news and bad news. The good news is that the family is still with us but we don’t yet know where they go at night or where the nest was. The bad news is that there are only 8 ducklings left.
